Geoff Penny began studying guitar at the age of 28
with Sebastian Jorgenson and later Susan Ellis. He has attended master classes
run by John Williams, Peter Altmier Mort, Timothy Walker, and Gerald Garcia.
In 1991 he graduated as a studio music teacher at
Victoria College, Burwood, and has concentrated on music education.
He believes that speed and technical difficulty
should not be given priority over sensitive interpretation of the music and the
creation of physically beautiful sound.
"Technical brilliance is
exciting to the intellect, but it's the intrinsic beauty of the notes and the
space between them that feeds the soul".
This philosophy is evident in this, his first CD, Pennies
From Heaven.
An important part of striving for the finest
possible sound is to play a fine instrument. Geoff plays an early Simon Marty,
which demonstrates clearly his growing reputation for building guitars which are
beautifully sonorous and generous in volume.
