ABOUT THE RECORD "Illegal Copy #2"
A lot of music has been played and listened to in the San Gregorio General Store. It is home to many different types of music and musicians for a variety of reasons: the views, the get-away happy rebellion environment, ties to the local environment and wild things. I have been playing in the store since about 1995 when I asked George if I could try playing some Saturday mornings. He said "ok we can try it - about what time" and I said "what time do you open". It turned out that was around 8am when Ted was sweeping and oiling the floors... Even though many like me miss Beth's kitchen in there, music in the mornings has grown into a nice acoustic coffeehouse with a few excellent bloody marys thrown in...One of the great dynamics of the store is its ability to audibly reflect the mood of the room through the music being performed. The tracks on this disc are recorded as a pretty primitive stereo mix right out of the room for our entire first set performed on March 23nd, 2002. What happened that afternoon is a good example of what is almost likely to happen when you play in San Gregorio. The band hears everything, the room is responsive, the crowd is relaxed but not necessarily quiet and everyone is damn glad to be there. So Illegal Copy #2 is a bootleg I am putting out there to say thank you to George Cattermole and San Gregorio for being there. - David Elias
