A listen to "Expedition," the debut CD by
Gallery of Souls, reveals the freedom that
a band of four highly skilled musicians has when making an
album for the sheer joy of it. Infatuation,
turmoil, sadness, love (of course) and plain
ol" fun and are just a sampling of the songs'
subject matter, while hard-edged rock,
thoughtful balladry, Mersey-beat and
psychedelia throwbacks, punk sneer and
energetic rave-ups take the listener on
numerous stylistic detours. Yet, for all of
this apparent diversity, big guitars,
unrelenting rhythms and stick-in-your-head
melodies always provide a muscular power pop
framework, resulting in a surprisingly coherent
and satisfying collection of songs.
