A Baton Rouge based rock quintet, 3 Ring Circus is a unique combination of hard, riff driven southern rock with a heavy, pulse pounding bottom end. Mix in the fiery harmonies and you have the witch’s brew that is 3 Ring Circus. The group is comprised of singer Ray Castillo, drummer Hector Ortega, bassist Miguel Valderrama, and guitarists Paul Catledge and Michael Barr. Both Castillo and Ortega hail from the Dominican Republic, while Valderrama is a citizen of Venezuela. Barr and Catledge hail from the areas of Mandeville and New Orleans, respectively. This collision of cultures and influences produces a dynamic, evolved music unlike any other.
The drum rhythms, influenced by both the afro-cuban rhythms of the Dominican Republic and modern progressive rock, lay down an impenetrable wall of ass moving hard rock. Layered on top, are the heavy, driving guitars of Catledge and Barr. Both Barr and Catledge were heavily influenced by the blues and the southern traditions of the dirty south and each brings with them a raw, “put the women and children to bed and go looking for dinner” approach to the band. Front man Ray Castillo pumps out the vocals in a never-ending cascade of thought provoking lyrics and unforgettable harmonies. Drop in the gut wrenching bass melodies of a manic Valderrama and you have the primordial soup that is 3 Ring Circus.
The songs crafted by 3 Ring Circus are as diverse as its members. They range from the punk inspired song “Nevergirl” to the melancholic “Opus”, and from the angst ridden, hard rock of “Letters to Kirby” to the soulful, southern rock of “Dog on a Chain”. 3 Ring Circus runs the gamut of styles and flavors while remaining true to their unique sound.
3 Ring Circus has received radio airplay on X104.9 and are a local favorite on 91.1 KLSU, receiving numerous requests. They have also been invited on the “Saturated Neighborhood” show on KLSU to do a live set. They are a featured band on Redstick Rock.com, a local original music website and have also been featured in the LSU newspaper, “The Reveille”. The Circus has played shows all over the Baton Rouge area and for such festivals as the “Kiss the Earth Day Celebration” at the LSU Parade Grounds and the Redstick Rock Local Throwdown.
3 Ring Circus is continuing to gain momentum and respect in a scene where cover bands and DJs rule the bars. That they have been able to survive in this hostile environment is a testament to their will, dedication, and tenacity. They hope to continue building on their loyal fan base by expanding into New Orleans, Lafayette, and beyond. Look forward to an upcoming album release in mid-October, featuring new songs as well as some remastered songs.
