Greetings and warm wishes.
Out of the Shadows came together during the summer of 2001. I was at a
critical point in my life and change was inevitable. During this
process I revisited other similar times of emotional intensity and I was
able to retell some of my stories through music.
Because I live in New Zealand in the South Pacific, the band and I tried
to inject some local rhythm and sound into some of the tracks (Palm
Trees in Her Eyes, and Shelly Bay). In others, we relied on the raw
vulnerability in my voice and presentation and used the standard guitar
sound (I am not my body, and Need You Now). Love My Dysfunction has
the added bonus of a trombone which plays with and follows my voice
around.
The album was self published and has not been released, but did receive
some positive reviews. The following was published in NZ Musician
Magazine September 2001
If there's such a thing as the definitive Kiwi jazz sound, this comes
pretty close. All the songs are by Allen and she delivers
them unpretentiously and with warmth. I Am Not My Body is the stand out
track for me vocally, although time and again throughout the album I
find myself drawn to the Kokomo backing.

When I lived in Europe I was always homesick. For New Zealand. Where
life for me is a lot simpler, easier and more natural.

Playing around with the shadow side of ourselves. This dark and
sometimes naughty side can bring with it a dysfunction or two. In the
song I am the shadow trying to get my other 'straight' side to admit I'm
there. They say, if you deny this side of you exists, in your struggle
to cover it up, an addiction can emerge in you.

I had a weird experience whilst recording a song called Ocean of Love
which didn't make it to this album. I seemed to swap realities with the
song, or I became the song in some way. It was an ecstatic experience
and it inspired this.
