Devour Ensemble is a collaborative musical project whose dark, neo-classically tinged sound comes primarily from core members Michael Bridges and Anthony Cook. The band's aim is to combine the intensity of contemporary artists like Nick Cave, NIN, Depeche Mode and Swans with the colourful arrangements of composers like Michael Nyman, Arvo Pärt and Igor Stravinsky. D.E. deliberately involve a variety of artists in the songwriting and recording process to give each of their compositions a distinct feel. This was strikingly apparent on their debut EP 'The Moon's Bright 3rd', a powerful statement of musical intent betraying a multitude of reference points as diverse as carney music, doom metal, delicate ethereal pop and orchestral film score material. The EP was enthusiastically received un the European underground press, hailed as (among other things) “proof that Australia has more to offer than kangaroos and sheep”. 'The Moon's Bright 3rd' will soon be followed up by a CD single of remixes and new tracks to tide over audiences while Devour Ensemble work on their next full-blown incarnation. In the meanwhile, they have busied themselves completing works for film and the web.

A long-ish remix from our upcoming CD single. We toyed with the idea of calling this the "bleep'n'blues" mix. It's got more swampy guitar (cut up quite extensively to see if we could find new rhythms hiding in the original song) and tons more electronic squall, with a bit of a NIN feel in the long building intro and a completely different bluesy ending that features some new vocals. Hope you like it.

A rough version of a soundscape piece that's a bit of a tangent for us. We've constructed the beat around the amazing call of the capercaille bird and utilised drumn'n'bass-like rhythms and Turkish Oud along with more stylistically familiar string and piano melodies. Like much of the material from our upcoming EP (called WOLVERINE), this piece deals with themes relating to the natural world. It differs completely in style from the other songs, though. Have fun with it! |
