In the crowded world of aspiring singer/songwriters it takes a lot of courage and prodigious talent just to step into the fray. But when you possess the rich, distinctive voice and the masterful songwriting skills of Sam Barron it’s a step well worth taking.
(John, Andy, & Sam @ CD release party)
Barron finds beauty in the imperfection of the world. He sifts through emotional debris with a wounded dignity that is always compelling and never at the expense of joy and grace. He chronicles loneliness and despair without resorting to self-pity – a straightforward songwriting style that sits comfortably in the storytelling tradition of Bob Dylan, with lyrics that often bring to mind the emotional weightiness of such luminaries as Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, and Mark Eitzel. Barron states, “I try to write songs that tell a story, songs that create a feeling, an impression -- as opposed to songs with a traditional beginning, a middle, and end.”
Barron’s music encompasses a variety of styles, including folk, rock, jazz and the blues. His melodies are often set to unusual, syncopated rhythms and two-chord bounces. And he exhibits considerable guitar playing skills, employing unusual strum and finger-picking patterns, alternate tunings and various capo positions. But, it’s Sam’s voice -- at once smooth and plaintive, then fierce and gritty -- which instantly commands your attention.
On his latest release Tempus Fugitive Sam collaborates with longtime friend, Luke Abbey, whose roots lay in the New York City punk scene of the ‘90s, and who received considerable notoriety for his much vaunted band, The Gorilla Biscuits. On Tempus Fugitive Sam and Luke create an extremely dramatic and emotional album -- one that has both dark moments and uncharacteristically optimistic ones. It takes you on a journey through a vast range of thoughts and emotions, humor and gravity, and proclamations of joy and despair. And a few curveballs are thrown in for good measure.
It only takes a single listening to Sam Barron’s music to know that he truly believes what he’s singing about. The sheer grit and power of his new CD, Tempus Fugitive, showcases Barron as a worthy successor to some of the great songwriters of the past, and makes him a peer to many of today’s greatest talents. -Ken Herbst
