The Finding was an excellent band which played minor and major club dates in and around Los Angeles and the Pasadena/Inland Empire areas during the early 90's. The group was initially composed of songwriting team (singer/lyricist) Frank Gillman and (keyboardist) Roger Taylor. The band evolved from a previous group "Postage Due", so named because the members worked together in a downtown LA mailroom. After the entrance of studio drummer Scott Connor and guitarist Darryl Marini, it became clear a more suitable name was required for the new line-up. Scott came up with the new name, and it quickly stuck. The group recorded its first demo at a 16 track studio in the Valley, with Darryl playing guitars and bass. As they planned coming gigs, they realised they needed a bassist for the new sound, which had been greatly improved ("Postage Due" although its members had played with energy, had not been noted for its extreme musical ability). The group found its final member in David Raymer, who was a longtime friend of Scott's. Dave brought in his new fretless Jazz bass (which he had built himself) and the new sound of the group was complete. Frank, with his strong pop influences (from Neil Diamond to Elvis and Peter Gabriel) and Roger, who often reminded listeners of the intense work of Keith Emerson or Rick Wakeman, found this unlikely combination made for a unique sound - equal parts accessible and musically challenging. With the line-up complete they went on to perform gigs at many clubs, including North Hollywood's FM Station, LA's China Club, Pasadena's Club Pappillion, and many others. Listeners were astounded at the musical intensity with which the group played, and many bands started to not want to follow them on stage. The group opted for a "business-like" stage persona, ala Tin Machine, which suited the professional image and work ethic of this band. A new demo was created at a studio in Burbank which was recorded entirely live to DAT, well-illustrating the precision and clean sound of this group live. It sounded, if anything, better than the previous multi-track demo, and said one listener "It's got balls!" The group went on to play many more gigs, and record one more demo "I Think of You" which was the group's best composition and performance to date. Despite becoming very close to being signed on several occasions, it appears that the schitzophrenic LA music scene, in the throes of the "grunge music" explosion, just didn't know what to make of The Finding, which it's precise arrangements and heartfelt lyrics. The group eventually split up after too short a time, with Gillman and Taylor continuing for a time to work on solo projects together, and Darryl, David and Scott played in different cover/classic rock bands. Unfortunately, this group probably never had a chance to reach its full potential. Here are some examples of this fantastic band, which may someday still reach the audience it deserved. Enjoy!!!
