"Jazz is often considered a conversation, or dialogue, between performers. Solo recordings are more like singular statements. I have attempted to tell stories from my life, especially of the last two years, and in the process have collected a series of my own statements. Sartre said, 'All that we are is the result of what we have thought.' In
this light, the statements in this album must be me." from the liner notes in Statements from Black Hat Records.
Statements
is a solo album, in the lines of Julius Hemphill's Blue
Boye, Joe McPhee's Tenor
& Fallen Angels and Anthony Braxton's For
Alto. Michael plays all parts and instruments, including some bassoon
and percussion. You can hear all 12 tracks by visiting Black Hat Records or the Statements audio page. The latest reviews call Statements "very intriguing" and "great music".
One version of Statements, is a numbered limited edition enhanced CD for PC and Mac. The enhancement
contains an interview, art and poetry by Michael and other artists,
information on the instruments used, the stories behind the songs
and more. The numbered limitied edition enhanced
version is available from The Jazz Loft, Amazon, and Black Hat Records.
Statements is available with three different covers and
poems all by different artists. You can download them from the Black
Hat Records website, under the "Free Extras" section. Just print
them out on your printer to replace the cover and traycard that comes with your
MP3.com version of Statements.
You can hear Michael Cooke's Quartet's album, Searching, from Black Hat Records, is available at the
Jazz Loft. This eclectic album has songs influenced by Latin, Indian, Asian and Classical music. A gutsy and risk taking performance, Searching is a musical adventure for the Jazz enthusiast.
