Ask what they are. They probably couldn’t tell you, nor could their fans. They might tell you that “The band is like a whore; Beautiful, eager, ready to go, full of energy, and odd twists and surprises. The problem is no one knows they are for sale.” The dictionary would tell you ‘characteristic signs or indications of the existence of something else derived or coming from an erroneous perception of reality,’ but neither of those definitions would give you no idea who or what they are. The only true way they identify themselves is through their music and the sounds they have created. Coming from the suburbs of St. Louis city, symptoms of illusion created a sound of conflict and pain unifying into a melodic and harmonic noise. With influences ranging from modern bands such as Cold, Korn, Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Coal Chamber, Deftones, Finger Eleven, Disturbed, Godhead, Orgy, Staind, Linkin Park, Static-X, Mindless Self Indulgence, System of A Down, Ozzy, Aphex Twin, Gravity Kills to the influences of Jazz, Classic Rock, and classical music, Symptoms of Illusion composed and created a sound that was their own, and reflected themselves as individuals. Coming together in High School, vocalist and synth guitarist Matt Nichols, and bassist & keyboard player Elena Pahl began to play together, though at the time Nichols was playing drums. The following year, after a long search for a guitarist, they were introduced to guitarist and vocalist David Brown, who was struggling to create his own band. Playing around with different arrangements they decided they needed a lead singer. A few months later they discovered the drummer David Bond, who had recently moved from Pensacola, Florida and was looking to play in a band again. Just so happens that Nichol’s enjoyed singing as well, so Bond became their drummer and Matt Nichols became the front man. Brown’s vocals became backups as well. With the addition of Matt Dunlop, the 5th member of the band, who operated lights and was just as much a part of the band of the rest of musicians, the band was complete with five individuals, who could play numerous instruments and had fairly extensive musical backgrounds, that worked and became the sound that is symptoms of illusion. A year after the formation of the band, symptoms of illusion had won 1st place in battle of the bands for their school, 1st in competitions at a local bar, 2nd in a city wide competition, were finalists in Monday Night Mayhem events with regional metal bands, independently recorded their 1st album, had their song 'cold' selected to appear on a national rock compilation CD, had their songs placing well on the charts at 'garage band' before it shut down, and were playing with local bands from around the area as well as filling slots with national acts including American Head Charge, and Onesidezero. It seems with every live show they gain more attention from fans due to their energy, tightness, and stage performance. After symptoms of illusion’s set at a charity show for children’s miracle network, the act preceding them exclaimed, “those guys scared the hell out of me, and I know they scared the hell out of all of you!" This was just a single impression of many that symptoms of illusion are sure to leave on you.
