"Invocation" (1999-2000) for flute and organ is an ethereal work. This piece has been called "one of the most beautiful flute pieces ever written" by the press. The work was written for and is dedicated to Sally Turner and Sandra Gay who perform it. "Invocation" is defined in the dictionary as "a prayer used in invoking, as at the opening of a religious service." It is this mood which drives the work. |

"Hallelujah Shout" (1999) for piano duet was written for and is dedicated to duo pianists Timothy and Nancy LeRoi Nickel. Part of the composer's family heritage stems from the evangelical camp meetings of New England. The music (often in "gospel" and "revivalist" styles) associated with these meetings is the primary influence for this work. Although there are no actual hymn tunes used in the work, the spirit of these types of hymns are explored. Traditional harmonies and cadences from this kind of music also appear in various forms and figurations, often becoming parts of repeated figurations. This performance is by the Repetitiousness Piano Duo Players. |
