Booty Resonant Frequency (BRF) - The frequency that,
when produced by sound waves, induces the booty to start
shaking.
BRF is a Pittsburgh-based Funk/Progressive Rock/Jazz band
focusing on groove-oriented original music. We are
no longer active as a group, as several members
have left the Pittsburgh area in 2000/2001.
BRF started as a regular jam/recording session for
a number of robotics grad students at Carnegie Mellon
University, though we soon accepted several
less geek-oriented musicians into our ranks.
Most of our songs were spawned in jam sessions,
sometime around one person's pre-existing part
or concept, and were then refined and recorded.
The band lineup changed over time, and can be broken
down into three versions:
- BRF 1.0 - Erin 'Scratchy' Hutter, violin; Chris Leger,
five-string fretless, six-string bass, and electric guitar; Kevin Lenzo,
five-string bass, electric guitar, and acoustic guitar; Martin
C. Martin, vocals; Garth Zeglin, trumpet.
- BRF 2.0 - Scott Baugh, drums; Scratchy, violin; Chris and Kevin, basses and
guitar; Matt Siegler, Keyboards; Garth, trumpet.
- BRF 3.0 - Scott, drums; Chris, bass; Kevin, bass and guitar;
Matt, keyboards; Garth, trumpet.
Our musical influences vary from person to person,
though P-funk, King Crimson (particularly 1981-84),
Talking Heads, and various funk, jazz, and fusion
figure in. Most of our songs feature two basses,
functioning in a low-hi configuration at some times
but forming a single, gigantic Voltron-bass at others.
Garth, Scratchy, and Martin are out in front, while Matt
wanders back and forth between the rhythm section
and solos depending on what's needed. We were quite
happy to replace Dr. Rhythm when Scott joined the
band in late 1998. As much as we all love robots, they're
still not up to par with an actual human drummer.
Recording details:
All songs were written, performed, recorded, and engineered
by the band. Jam locations moved from house to house
as band sizes, members, and domiciles, changed, but
all recording was done either at Kevin's house (BRF 1.0),
Garth's house (BRF 2.0), or Scott's house (BRF 3.0).
Recording equipment consisted of an 8-track for the 1.0
material, and an Echo Layla and supporting gear for
later material. All tracks were mixed using Sonic Foundry
Vegas Audio on a PC.
