This is a work commissioned by The Kansas City Symphony Orchestra in 1997. I was only 17 at that time and was inspired by the love of a young lady, as well as, the explorations of my sister, Kirry Nelson. Most of all, the work is an ode to crows, which spend the winter here in Kansas City. A youthful exploration, the work is paramount in my journey through music composition. |

It could be said that I've developed a tantric style of composition, by which one fixates on a concept, in this case the ten stages of he Bodhisattva's enlightenment, and then works to embody that concept through the process of becoming that is music compostion. This method challenges one to develop spiritually/personally as well as musically.
A Bodhisattva is an enlightened being motivated by pure compassion and love. The Bodhisattva will undergo any type suffering to help another sentient being, whether a tiny insect or a huge mammal. In Shakyamuni Buddha's "Perfection of Wisdom in 8,000 Lines" it states: "I will become a savior to all those beings, I will release them from all their sufferings." |
