Formed in early 2001, Means of Escape blend elements of hard hitting metal aggression with subtle melody. The English, Nottingham based four piece have come together from varying musical backgrounds, including traditional rock, funk and obviously, metal. With a down tuned approach, most of the songs aim to deliver a hard hitting, abrasive sound that grooves nonetheless and it is apparent where many of the influences are drawn from.
Vocally, frontman Shanes greatest influences are Mike Patton and Jim Morrison, but some of his vocal deliveries exhibit traits of Rage Against the Machine style rap. He writes about serious issues and supplies fantastic, powerful vocals to be inspired by.
The rhythm section, comprising drums and bass, drive the overall sound behind Means of Escape, with Bill (drums) who loves all music styles for their rhythmic qualities, and Ant (bass) grew up with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. One of the reasons Means of Escape may give a different sound to more traditional metal is the fact, like many metal bands, the bass does not just sit behind the guitars apologising for its presence. It instead takes a major role creating a solid groove backbone for the guitars and vocals to work upon, especially showing itself in songs where the guitars drop out for sections to highlight Shanes vocals and a more subtle approach rather than a full down tuned attack all the time.
So what about the guitars? Mick (guitar) is probably the one who has the least surprising tastes.....metal and a hint of blues. Playing great riffs and leaning seriously on the groove backbone of the rhythm section, MOE play big groove riffs intended to get people excited about music.
Means of Escape are a new band who individually have played plenty of gigs, but they hope youw will share their optimism that at this point in time…they think they have got the mix just right!
