About two years
ago, I developed a fascination with beatboxing. It started as something
I did in the shower and quickly became a compulsion. During the summer
of 2000 I was thinking how it would be great to get a group of beatboxers
together, each armed with an arsenal of FX boxes, to make live electronic
music. Not wanting to deal with the logistics of organizing such
a project, I decided to attempt it on my own. I found
a looper with the right capabilities and began to amass a small arsenal
of FX boxes.
So here's how
I make my music: I call it "improvised electronic beatboxing."
I've got a microphone, some FX boxes, and a looper called the DJNRND2 which
lets me record up to 14 loops on the fly. Using this setup, I can
improvise both the sounds and the parts of the music in real-time, using
my mouth as the sound source. Because there is such a low overhead
for creating sounds with this setup, I am able to materialize the
music that is perpetually echoing in my head within seconds. The
mouth is a versatile synthesizer, capable of a wide range of sonic
textures. The setup lends itself well to a live performance
context; the recordings on this site are practice sessions in my bedroom.
Because each recording is essentially a live performance, created in the
span of minutes, the music closely reflects my state of mind at particular
instants in time.
I fell upon
the name one Sunday afternoon in the New England aquarium. Next to
the octopus tank was this big black sign with the words
" 'head-footed'. . . no distinct boundaries
between the head and the foot. . . ".
This definition embodies the ways in which I try to approach
music and dance. . . and all things for that matter. I liked the
ring of it as well.
Please do not
hesitate to contact me with questions, comments, feedback, or just to talk
about music, dance, or anything for that matter.
