After The Simpletons, the band I was in, folded,
I didn't have any outlet for the songs I was writing. I tried to find another band, or get the old band
back together, but somehow things just weren't happening. So I decided to form The Sinistrals - a band which
was basically me, and anyone else who was interested in playing or helping.
At the time, I was very busy building a (now defunct) rival site to www.mp3.com, and so all my energies
were taken up with this, leaving only a little time for recording and writing. Thanks to an offer from
a German web provider, I moved to Cologne to work, and basically I was stuck without any recording gear in a
tiny little flat in Domstrasse. This, however, proved to be the catalyst. Being alone in a strange city, in a
small flat with very little in the way of entertainment meant that I had few distractions from songwriting.
Some of these songs have been available as part of UKMG, or were originally
going to be part of the third Simpletons album (which was never made). The rest are completely new and original. Contributions
by others are noted in the song info.

This damn song haunted me for two years. The backing and riff has
been in no less than three different versions. Finally I managed to
put together some words which I was happy with, which is what
you hear. Prior to this, it had a totally different subject and melody. |

The original take of October Girl. This has been passed over in favour of a
faster take that raises the key. |
