Ray Vincent Adams (1952 -)
Ray Vincent Adams began his conducting
studies at S.U.N.Y Fredonia under Harry John Brown. Upon graduation he received
his certification as a Registered Music Therapist. He moved to the Aspen area
in 1976 and began his studies as a conducting fellow with the Aspen Music
Festival under Murry Sidlin. Mr. Adams participated in Master Classes with
Jorge Mester, Leonard Slatkin and Sergiu Commissiona. Mr. Adams began
conducting choral concerts one year after his arrival in Aspen, and his annual
“Messiah” concerts have enjoyed continued success since 1977.
Under his direction the Aspen
Choral Society incorporated in 1995 and began to focus on choral masterworks.
Since 1999 Adams has steered the choral society toward
larger works including the Mozart
“Requiem”, the Mozart “Great Mass in C Minor”, and
Brahams “German Requiem.” Mr. Adams is also a very active composer.
He has served as composer-in-residence for the Aspen Community Church, Glenwood
Springs Lutheran Church and the Aspen Choral Society.
The 2000-2001 season saw the world
premiere of two Adams’ compositions. “Angels” was performed
December 8th – 9th, 2000 at Harris Concert Hall in
Aspen, Colorado. It is a sacred choral suite for women’s chorus, soloists
and string orchestra. “Songs of Divine Love,” a song cycle based on
the poems of the Sufi mystic, Rumi, was premiered on Feburary 14, 2001.
November 30th and December 1, 2001 saw the very sucessful premiere of Revelation, a 7 movement piece for women's choir and string orchestra. Adams was featured prominently in the Aspen
Times , discussing his philosophy and the process of composing Revelation.
