1989. Yeah, everyone remembers the year a roots
reggae band out of Fredericton, New Brunswick
started jamming its way across the Maritimes,
on the way to becoming one of the hottest, best
loved and most unique acts that has ever called
the East Coast home. Well, maybe not everyone - but if you ever saw them play,
you'll never forget it.
And though the end isn't really far away now,
maybe this is where the story really begins.
From 1990 through 1992, the Ujies played gig
after gig across the Maritimes to a growing
audience of die-hard fans, neophytes discovering
reggae for the first time, and college kids and
midnight revelers looking to get happy, party,
and lose themselves in the music. And what music
it was. Armed with far too many original songs
to be able to play during a weekend's worth of
concert, Ujamaa had virtually a new show each
time you went to see them. They sang songs of
freedom, songs of rebellion and sweet songs of
love and tenderness - the music was always
memorable.
The music below is compiled from these shows and
captures the band at its absolute peak - tight,
intense and electrifying, jamming long and hard
to packed houses of simultaneously frenzied and
enraptured audiences, and enjoying themselves
every bit as much as the crowd. Live! At the
Flamingo gives you Ujamaa at its raw, jamming
best - catching fire live with the precision
and passion that brought vibe-hungry audiences
out to the shows again and again.
