Introducing
the North End Artists Collective:
No Fixed Address
It's
not every day that you hear good news coming from Winnipeg's inner city,
but a new CD from the Winnipeg Centre Vineyard emphasizes some of the good
things going on in the North End that are often missed. WCV is a church
community based in the inner city. It was drawn there by a desire to really
listen to the voices in our society that are usually left unheard.
Within the community are a variety of artists: from street-poets whose
only audience were friends and passers-by to professional recording artists.
This CD is a cross-section of that community.
Margaret
McIntyre is an aboriginal woman who writes songs in her native tongue.
Colleen Kwade is a wife and a mother who writes with her husband, Rob.
Gord Kent is a poet who has spent enough time on Winnipeg's streets to
know the real meaning behind his poem, Cold Wind. David Ruis is a well-known
worship leader whose albums have sold in the tens of thousands.
But
perhaps the most striking story of the CD is that of Charlie Moar. Charlie
had appeared in city papers on more than one occasion, though he didn't
welcome his celebrity status. He was known for his substance-abuse, a notorious
North End "sniffer". But Charlie always expressed his desire to rise above
that label. Sadly, he never found that freedom in this life. Two weeks
after completing the recording of his song Follow, Charlie passed away,
alone, next to a dumpster.
Charlie
is free now, and he left us his song of freedom. No Fixed Address joins
his voice with the voices of his friends to sing his song.

by Charlie Moar
"Charlie's addictions were the kind that are harder to hide than yours and mine, but his faith shone through in his desire to return again and again to the Father, knowing that his weakness was not too big an issue for this God who loves him." - from Charlie's memorial |
