Automated Corn Shucker is the first T.S. remastered release. You can hear several of the trademarks of his playing: His unique picking style is almost raga like (Indian Classical music). Listen to the microtonal variations, the constant pulsing and droning. The skill and talent of the execution. His use of difficult time meters (alternating 5s and 4s). It is easy to see how bands like King Crimson could be influenced by this blues legend. This is obviously a man who has devoted his life to the development of his art.The simple lyrics carry a seething, frothing, building anger at his indignity of losing two fingers to the corn shucker. Imagine his dismay: No longer able to point or raise his middle finger in anger with his right hand. The anger builds, triggering an episode, yet the guitar holds the pulse. Enviable expression and depth. |

This is a later version by T.S. of his classic "TS, Gaddammit, You Scared Another Possum." It features an introductory "cutting session" between T.S. and his good friend Tonk Verdel. In this version, the verse maintains a bluesy background with the non-sequitorial T.S. lyrics making their literary allusions while maintaining a non-linear narrative of the events preceding T.S.'s being blinded in the poisonous jambalaya incident by his step-father, Jesus Monroe Gonzales. (Predating and foreshadowing contemporary post-modernist story telling in its self-awareness.) For the chorus, T.S. draws on his wealth of knowledge about American music and throws in an Appalachian Mountain music ("Folk") sensibility. You could waltz to it, excepting the 4/4 bar pickup in the middle. The NBRQ is to be commended for the clarity in the remastering of this classic.
