Ruben, a member of the Cuban Association of Music Authors and Conductors, has performed as a pianist, percussionist and lead vocalist since 1987. While studying at the prestigious musical conservatory Barbarito Diez in Las Tunas, Cuba, during 1989-1993, Ruben was juggling theory classes and live performances as a member of various local bands. In 1996 he became the musical director of his own 14 piece orchestra 'Embajadores Del Ritmo' which obtained first prize for best orchestration at the festival of the Villa de Los Molinos'. That same year Ruben signed an exclusive contract with the Cosmopolitan Caribbean Music label under Magic Music as director of Embajadores Del Ritmo. The following year, the orchestra played at the 'Cuba Disco '97' event and sold one of his compositions which was then used on the CD 'Isla de la Musica', a compilation disc of various Cuban bands. He also directed his orchestra in the famous 'El son mas Largo del Mundo'-an event held in Havana which broke the Guinness record for the longest band playing time in history. The event broke the then standing record of 3 days of non stop live performances achieved by event coordinators in Spain by creating a 6 full days of ceaseless music on the streets of Havana. Ruben has resided in the National Capital Region since 1997, presently captivating audiences as the lead vocalist for the Afro Cubano Jazz group 'Azuka' and as a solo performer whose repertoire includes a vast array of original compositions. His works include salsa, meringue, cha cha cha and standard Cuban rhythms. A show not to be missed. |
