With influences ranging form the likes of Pancho Sanchez, Buena Vista Social Club and Cubanisimo, Azuka pumps out a rhythmically powerful sound full of lyrical improvisation. In keeping with tradition of Afro Cuban Jazz, this ensemble allows for versatility in its performances through experimentation with original arrangements. With these Azuka manages to fuse Salsa with the brave intricacies of jazz. Cuban pianist Julio Cesar thrills the ear with his feverish yet soulful playing, bringing to mind the genius of the legendary Chucho Valdez. Ruben, also a native of Cuba, charms and mesmerizes with his smoky vocals and percussion. The horns of Kelly Craig and Rick Ragno accomplish a unique feat by melding the crispness of Arturro Sandoval with the fervor of Dizzy Gillespie while providing delicate grooves in their ballads. Jeff Rogers, an emerging talent who is definately one to watch on the climb, lends warmth and a touch of hep cat to the ensemble. Add the deep rich tones of Stewart Watkins' bass and the pulse of Alvero De Minyana's congas to the line up and the stage is set for nothing short of a blissful performance. |
