An energetic piece with robust arpeggio patterns, "To Malvina" is similar in form to those compositions by Felix Mendelssohn known as his "Songs Without Words". As is the case here with Mertz, a beautiful romantic melody is supported by a chordal accompaniment in arpeggiated cascades of notes. Evident as heard here is an intimate melodic lyricism which is intensely expressed by Johann Kaspar Mertz (1806-1856), a guitar and flute virtuoso who toured throughout Europe and Russia. He composed productively for the solo guitar and for the duo ensemble of guitar and piano. This is a recording of a live performance and Robert Wetzel uses his Miguel Rodriguez guitar which was constructed by the great luthier in 1976. If you would like to listen to some world-premiere arrangements for two guitars of works by Mozart, Vivaldi, Beethoven, Liszt and Chopin among others, go to mp3.com/odeumguitarduo where Robert performs with his colleague, the versatile guitarist, Fred Benedetti. Together, they are known as the ODEUM GUITAR DUO, an acclaimed and award-winning guitar duo! |
