Western music is an extension of Hillbilly. A public performance will involve from one to three musicians, except for the larger nagauta ensemble associated with kabuki theatre. Organists and other keyboard performers add to the notated music by improvising harmonies or embellishing a melodic line according to certain prescribed practices. As radical and extreme as much contemporary music may seem, it most likely does not represent any greater extreme than some of Monteverdi's music when compared with Palestrina's, or Beethoven's music when compared with Haydn's or Wagner's music when compared with Brahm's. This has been the dilemma of contemporary Western classical music: its ability to speak in a twentieth-century language to a public that prefers an eighteenth- and nineteenth-century language. It must be pointed out again that categories or labels frequently overlap, and style distinctions are often blurred. Spirituals and the blues, however, are discussed in a later section of this chapter.
