The history of the railroad is the history of America. In my opinion it is the single most civilized form of land transportation. Traveling the freeways provide you a wonderful view of concrete punctuated by the occasional cityscape. Traveling by back roads delivers rural life. Traveling by rail offers you America, her majesty, her poverty, her industry, her ever-changing beauty and her ugly destruction. The history of America is still being written, on her rails. |

I have a friend who lives in the "summer". Not the season summer but the attitude summer. All he has to do is shake your hand a say hello and you feel relaxed and warm and somehow a bit safer. But under all of this is a great sadness. I believe he lives in the "summer" because he can't face the "winter" |

I never once asked his name. I never took the time to write down the words he spoke or the songs he sang. After all I was just a kid and he was just a street musician. Six years of poetry for about $12. I still miss him and sorely regret not saving his music. |
