Franz Schmidt was one of the leading composers in Austria during the early years of the 20th century. However, he was actually born in Bratislava, Slovakia, and was of German/Humgarian/Slovak heritage. His music abounds with Magyar and Slavic influences. Schmidt's output includes a considerable body of music for organ. Several of these works are of symphonic dimensions, including this Chaconne. It is essentially a vast four-movement sonata. The simple diatonic theme which forms the asis of the entire work undergoes an astounding array of permutations and transformations, attesting to the great fertility of the composer's imagination. The whole gamut of emotions is here: joy, pathos, playfulness, longing and finally triumphant joy. |
