From review of New Forms Festival in September 2001 Discorder Newspaper: "Local vocalist mikela j. mikael's exquisite voice and trip-hop backbeat are set for stardom as far as I'm concerned." - Robert Robot Album review by Leanne wierzba of Loop Magazine May 2001 Unspoken Unspoken Independent I cease to be impressed by Vancouver's vast wealth of musical talent. This album is another reminder of the depth and variety of sound that has been cultivated by musicians here. I hesitate to compare this album to others I've heard, as the sound is very original and personal. It has a somewhat loungey feel to it: very mellow and understated. Yet, at the same time, the sound is quite aggressive and melancholic. Perhaps it is Mikéla J. Mikael's eclectic vocal stylings that add an enigmatic and compelling feel to the music, which draws the listener further into the understated sound of the band. The band's use of string instruments (two violins, guitar and the double bass) and the djembé is innovative and compelling. The majority of this album was recorded live at Grrrlapalooza last summer, and it is apparent that these musicians are not only talented, but they are extremely good performers. Keep an eye out for them around town.
