Piezoelectricity in simple crystals was discovered in 1880 by Jacques and Pierre CURIE.
When a mechanical stress is applied to such material, it delivers electrical charges (direct effect). Measurement of the electrical signal will then give information on the stress applied.
In the opposite, if we apply an electrical voltage to it, mechanical strain is generated (reverse effect).
Piezo polymers are also pyroelectric. As they dilate when their temperature changes, they also deliver an electrical signal.
Piezo is also a finnish elektronic music project.
