We recorded this song on September 12. I spent September 11 recording news flashes. On the 12th, Kim S. came into the lab with the main riff. We beefed it up with bass & drums, and added samples.
Some of my more liberal minded friends have given me flack for putting John Ashcroft on the track, especially since his decision to harrass Oregon around the Death With Dignity Act, but I think on that day, no was thinking about any of that.
For me, this track conveys the fear and grief and terror of that day. The wailing guitars and the momentum of the riff sound like a giant crying. Scary and sad.
