Traditional: I added the forth verse to this old song. In the traditional version (always played) the guy kills the girl and is filled with regret. In this version he’s still filled with regret, but ends up in prison for life, without parole. |

The earliest recording I found of this old Outlaw tune is by the ‘Carolina Buddies’ from 1931 on a complilation disk called ‘My Ruff And Rowdy Ways’ Vol. 2, YAZOO 2040. I’ve also heard it by Doc Watson and Harvey Reid. |
