DJ Josh Phillips A.K.A., “The J.P.” has earned respect for being one of the most on point, up front Selekta’s The Drum n’ Bass community has witnessed thus far. Playing Shows around the Midwest, as well as putting out his own tunes on his new label (StompRecords.Net) it is no wonder at all why he is becoming one of the most sought after Junglist from the U.S.
"Merciless," Josh’s first “12” Recording on SR.N was a huge hit. In addition to its popularity by other D.J.’s, “Merciless” was also featured on the WMC 2003 compilation.
This rare tune can be classified as a few styles of Jungle however in his own words: “ I can’t label this track to any particular style of D&B, it’s just my style, I sat down w/ my new synth I had just got at the time and went to work.”
A native to the outskirts of Chicago, Josh has always had a passion for music. It all started when he was about 12 years old and picked up a guitar for the first time, at that moment he knew what he wanted to do for the rest of his life. As Josh got a little older he evolved into hip-hop, scraping his guitar for a pair of shell toes and learned to break dance and ended up being added to a local group of breakers. The DJ that did all the mix tapes for the shows showed Josh a pair of technique 1200’s for the first time. it was then when Josh finally understood what his purpose on earth was.
In 1997 as a High School Sophomore, Josh threw and DJ’d his first under ground event (Rave) titled Reverie (witch mean’s to daydream). At the time Josh was spinning hip-hop and was one of the only hip-hop DJ’s that was frequently asked to play at Rave’s. By the end of the year he put out his very first, now dubbed classic underground mix tape “B-Boy’s Noise”. He even was booked to DJ a School dance at his own high school.
Continuing with his fascination with the underground rave scene, Josh starting hearing interesting (very fast past) tunes called “Jungle” which at the time was sampling a lot of the hip hop tunes he had in his crate. It didn’t take long for him to fall in love with the raw sound of Drum n’ Bass.
In 1998, Josh put out his very first Drum n’ Bass mix called, “Bassed”. He then went out to party after party week after week selling the tape and handing them out to promoters. He also started throwing parties of his own and promoters started picking him up on their line up’s.
The following year, He was booked as a resident for “Club Gold” that was held on Tuesday’s at Rapture nightclub in Chicago. Josh was a resident along side the likes of Chicago’s God Father of Drum n’ Bass R.P. Smack and Dub Plate guru Kid Entropy.
During and after his stint was over at rapture, He continued to throw his own events with his promotional team “Pozitive Vibe Crew”. After the new millennium hit it became the beginning of the end for the rave scene in Chicago. Pozitive Vibe went on to do one more event up in Madison Wi. and after that Josh was ready to step it up and move on to the next level.
Josh’s latest initiative StompRecords.Net will involve many different forms of media. As the intro to many things to come first was the web site that every project will revolve around. Second was his first 12’ Single, “Merciless”. Third will be many other project’s like Compilation CD’s of Josh and label mates of StompRecords.Net, a new strictly D&B artist management/booking agency, a new series of “one off events”, and monthly club nights.
Since he was only 16 (now 23), Josh has been sweeping through North America Tearing up Venues and building respect around the globe. What's Next for this young Midwest Turntable Genus you ask? Stay tuned.....
