This song is a 12-bar blues in F minor with a very complex structure (if you know of one more complex, let me know). The first chorus consists of me playing a walking bass line on guitar. In the second chorus Raïssa introduces the melody accompanied by Alex and Christopher. For the third chorus Raïssa repeats the melody and Kelly adds the counter-melody. In the fourth chorus Alex sings a harmony parallel to Raïssa's melody, and Christopher sings a harmony parallel to Kelly's counter-melody, so we have a pair of duets over a walking bass line. Then Alex, Kelly, Christopher, and Raïssa each sing one improvised chorus, after which we repeat the first three vocal choruses. |

Known in French as "La Fille aux Cheveux de Lin", this piece was composed for solo piano. My theory is that Debussy had in mind the combination of soprano and guitar when he wrote this marvelous composition. In any case I find it is so much more exciting that way. What's so risky about playing a high note on the piano? But listen to Raïssa as she effortlessly sings way up in the stratosphere! |

"There are places in Russia where people feel that way all the time." I composed the melody for this piece while walking down 34th Street in Manhattan one night, and at the same time came up with the plan of introducing the singers one at a time. After I begin the piece accompanied only by my guitar, Christopher sings the melody in a key a minor third higher, with me singing harmony. As I drop out Alex sings the melody another minor third higher with Christopher singing harmony. Kelly sings the melody yet another minor third higher with both Alex and Christopher singing harmony. Raïssa joins the other three and sings the melody yet one more minor third higher, bringing us back to the original key. Kelly, Alex, and I each repeat the final phrase of the melody, an octave lower each time, bringing the piece to a close. |
