    JOE LYNN TURNER
    Rainbow/Deep Purple

    Joe Lynn Turner

Joe Lynn Turner began his musical career as the lead guitarist and lead vocalist of Fandango in the late 1970s. Turner sang and played on the band's four albums, from 1977's self-titled debut to 1980's Cadillac. His library and performances brought him to the attention of Rainbow's Ritchie Blackmore (who was also the founder of Deep Purple) and he was soon the band's charismatic frontman.

Turner's stay in Rainbow lasted from his 1981 debut on Difficult to Cure until the group's breakup in 1984. During that time, Rainbow released five albums and made their mark on MTV and Billboard's Rock Chart with hits like Stone Cold (Number One) and Street of Dreams (Number Two). After the band's breakup, Turner branched out musically.

In 1985, Turner struck out on his own and released his solo debut Rescue You. He assumed the lead vocal duties in guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen's band for 1985's Rising Force and 1988's Odyssey albums, as well as 1989's Live In Leningrad: Trial By Fire. During that time he also provided background vocals for Bonnie Tyler, Billy Joel, Cher, Don Johnson, Paul Carrack and Michael Bolton, among others.

1990 reunited Turner with Blackmore in a re-formed Deep Purple for the album Slaves and Masters. For the next three years of world touring Joe Lynn was the "voice" of Deep Purple, singing all of their classic hits on a nightly basis.

In 1995 Joe Lynn released his second solo album. Nothing Changed. 1997 saw his release of the all cover album Under Cover. It's sequel Under Cover 2 was released in 1999. In 1998, this "heavy metal messenger" also released the uniquely entitled album Hurry Up and Wait. 2000 saw the release of Holy Man which was supported by a successful Japanese Tour featuring Glenn Hughes. Slam was released in 2001. Joe and Glenn Hughes collaborated on the Hughes Turner Project (HTP) which was released in early 2002.

As the new Millennium came and passed, Joe Lynn Turner is busier than ever these days. Along with his diverse musical projects, session work and a successful solo career, Joe continues to involve himself in interesting and varied projects with some of the most talented people in the entertainment and music industry.

It was Rockforever.com night on the nationally syndicated radio program "Rockline." Coincidentally, two generations of Deep Purple lead singers were in our ranks in Rockforever Members and Voices of Classic Rock Artists Glenn Hughes and Joe Lynn Turner. To "take the show out" the guys offered and unplugged version of "Smoke On The Water." Joe and Glenn traded-off verses, with both singing the third. Pat Travers and John Cafferty joined Joe on accoustic guitar (and vocals), while Bobby Kimball and Mickey Thomas provided background. Quite a line-up...pure...listen directly from the "Rockline" studio "to air" board!

In 1980, Deep Purple founder Ritchie Blackmore invited Joe Lynn Turner to join his band Rainbow. Although the band had enjoyed overseas success since its founding in 1975 when Blackmore founded it, US commercial success was elusive. Blackmore and Turner wrote "Stone Cold" with Roger Glover about love lost. The song struck Number One on the US Rock charts and elevated Rainbow to new heights (and JLT in the process!).

Captured live during the taping of Rockforever's "Rockline" episode, Joe takes the accoustic guitar and sings "Stone Cold" unplugged, with Pat Travers and Glenn Hughes. This version is directly from the radio studio "to air" board.
