Growing up in rural Louisiana Grammy Award-winner, Bobby
Kimball was already playing the piano at the age of four.
Despite his early start, Kimball didn't launch directly
into a musical career. In fact, Kimball was a dental
student in the early seventies. However, music beckoned
and after singing with several groups in the New Orleans
area, he decided to leave for Los Angeles to finally
pursue his passion.
In the mid-seventies he did studio sessions with well-known
LA musicians Jeff Porcaro and David Paich. Apparently, Bobby
made quite an impression on the seasoned studio veterans. When
Porcaro and Paich were looking for a singer to join their new
band, Toto, they invited Bobby Kimball to become the lead vocalist.
Toto's debut album, Toto I was a huge hit and all Toto-members
were immediately stars in the music business. Bobby sang lead
on the album's Top 5 single, Hold The Line.
The band's success exploded through the roof in 1982 with
their release of Toto IV, which garnered a Number One
Pop Hit with Africa. The albums other single Rosanna stayed
at Number Two on the Pop Charts for five weeks, and won the
1983 Grammy for Best Vocal and for Record of the Year.
In all Toto won seven Grammy's as a result of Toto IV.
After the Toto IV album, Bobby Kimball met German producer
Frank Farian through Fitzgerald Hartley (Toto's manager).
Kimball recorded the vocals on the album Far Corporation -
Division One (1985), an album that included other Toto-ites
like Steve Lukather, David Paich and Simon Phillips. The
single Stairway to Heaven was a Top Ten hit on the
German charts and Bobby launched a solo career.
Bobby Kimball reunited with Toto in 1999 as it's original
members released Toto XX and toured worldwide in celebration
of the group's 20th Anniversary
Currently, Kimball resides in Los Angeles and thrives on
recording and performing more than ever.
