Mickey Thomas is arguably "the invisible man of Rock & Roll."
Ask even a hard core music aficionado who sang lead vocals on
The Elvin Bishop Band's 1975 smash hit, Fooled Around and Fell in Love and
most would respond, "Elvin Bishop." Ironically, the singer was in fact, not
the band's namesake - but a young singer with an impressive range from Cairo, Georgia
by the name of Mickey Thomas.
While Thomas's 1975-1979 stint with The Elvin Bishop Band might
have left fans confused about the name behind the band's soaring vocals - Thomas came into
his own in 1979 when he was asked to climb aboard Jefferson Starship/Starship.
Replacing Marty Balin and Grace Slick (both of whom had just left the band) as lead
vocalist was a daunting task.
"Those were big footsteps to fill, and many wondered if I actually could --
myself included. I mean Marty and Grace were rock icons," said Thomas. "We
went into the studio and recorded Jane as the first release with me on lead vocals --
and the rest is history as they say."
Mickey's career has included three Number One Pop Chart hits
(We Built This City, Sara, and Nothing's Gonna Stop Us), two
Number One Rock Chart hits (We Built This City and No Way Out), five
Gold albums, one Platinum album, a Grammy nomination, and a live performance at
the 1988 Academy Awards (of his Oscar-nominated hit Nothing's Gonna Stop Us from
the movie Mannequin).
