March 12, 2001Thanks to everyone who has written, and big thanks to those who have added me to their stations. (Check out the "Stations" link above and give them a listen. There's some great stuff there!) I've been very pleasantly surprised at the response to my first release. This page has had nearly 1000 hits, and nearly 600 of you have downloaded or otherwise listened to "Young Lust". Not exactly "Yahoo!" numbers, but not bad either. The track peaked at number 49 on the highly competitive mp3.com pop & rock chart. Again not bad, considering I'm up against some "real" musicians like David Bowie and Madonna. Mr. Gilmour himself is on the chart at the moment (a session gig with Liona Boyd). When I started this I wasn't expecting much more than a few kind emails from family and friends, so the results have been very gratifying. Thanks again to all of you who have listened. I have a new song below. I was digging through some old tapes recently, and found an original that I wrote and recorded about seven or eight years ago. It's got a great funk groove to it and some slightly Gilmouresque lead guitar. I took the original tape, cleaned up the recording a bit and uploaded it. Please give it a listen. I've been thinking about what to do next, and I've decided to focus on finishing my version of the Wish You Were Here album (see below). With that in mind, I've been playing with "Shine On", and doing some more serious polishing of "Wish You Were Here" (the song). WYWH is going to be my next release, hopefully within the next two weeks. What I useMy studio centers around a Fostex DMT-8 digital recorder/mixer, a Korg X5DR sound module, and my computer running Cakewalk Pro Audio 9. Other stuff includes the usual assortment of stomp boxes, a rack-mounted delay (DeltaLab Effectron I), EQ and compressor (Rocktron 310), a Yamaha keyboard and a dk10 drum pad. I have a Boss RV-2 reverb pedal wired into one of the effects loops on the DMT-8. My vocal mic is an Audio-Technica AT3525. I monitor through Sony MDR-7506 headphones or a Samson Servo 120 amp driving a pair of Polk Audio studio monitors. How I use itI tend to sequence everything (except vox), and then replace the MIDI guitar tracks (the Korg has some decent guitar voices) with my trusty Strat. I'll generally do the bass and drums first, followed by keyboards and then guitars. At this point I typically get bored or find something more compelling to work on, so I probably have close to fifty projects in progress. I've finished, at last count, one. What's nextMy biggest project to date is a recording of the entire Wish You Were Here album. I was hoping to have it done in time for the album's 25th anniversary, but I've missed that. I've been working on it, on and off (mostly off), for three or four years. The first half of "Shine On" is pretty much done, as is the title track (which I'm planning to release Real Soon Now™). "Have A Cigar" is in pretty good shape, but the guitars are gonna take a lot of work (and practice!). "Welcome to the Machine" is in its infancy; I'm going to have to master my Pulsar board to get the synth sounds for that one. The second half of "Shine On" is basically backing tracks at this point. That's another one where the guitars are going to be tough (the slide solo may kill me, but what a way to go). Let me know what you think! If you listen to my stuff, please consider dropping me a line to let me know what you thought of it. All comments, positive or otherwise, are welcome.
