Invigorating piano solo; the title refers to the famed "Mackinac Bridge" in Michigan and the music incorporates the curved shape of the cables in the rolling accompaniment figure; recently featured on Michigan Radio! |

I have separated "Prelude and Fugue on Two Carols" to allow this prelude to stand on its own. To hear how it was constructed, just hum the tune along, starting with the first note rising a third to the second note. |

This beautiful carol was first transcribed in the 30's or 40's and has steadily grown in popularity because of its bittersweet, haunting melody. The text speaks of the birth of a king who could have had anything in the world and yet was born in a cow's stall-- something to wonder about indeed! (see the lyrics for the whole text). This is one of my favorite carols and in my opinion the best American carol. |

"'Twas in the moon of wintertime" is the first line of this French carol with a Dakota Indian text. The text dates to the 1600's while the tune is probably 100 or more years older than that. This arrangement of the hauntingly beautiful tune is for piano solo. |

Piano solo; imagine the first frost of the season-- everything is shocked white and still, like a bride nervous but quiet, waiting for old winter-- the melody barely moves more than a couple of notes at a time-- an icy, breathstealing stillness protects memories of life, dressing even dead leaves in the veil. |

Piano solo; this is one of my personal favorites of my winter collection. What you hear at the beginning is the slow drip drop of snow and ice melting on one of those few days in January when it almost feels like spring. The "drops" coalesce into a tune of hopefulness until winter returns, slowly stops the melt and nature is still again. |

Upbeat guitar solo;"Kuviasungnerk" is an Eskimo word meaning "snow happiness", which I take to mean the almost giddy feeling one gets when it snows steadily, but not too hard, especially at the beginning of winter. That giddy feeling is transformed as winter progresses (heh!), but I think that is what the word means and what this little tune is inspired by. |
