"HUGO: What?OLGA: Everything. From the beginning.HUGO: Telling it, that's not hard; I know it by heart; I recited it to myself every day I was in prison. But what it means, that's something else again. It's an idiotic story, like all stories. If you look at it from a distance, everything holds together, more or less; but if you get up close to it, it busts apart. One action is over too quickly. It seems to happen almost spontaneously and you don't know whether you did it because you wanted to or because you couldn't hold it back. The fact is that I pulled the trigger." --Dirty Hands, Act 1. |

When they heard the news they came out of the restaurants and cafes and hotels and looked up at the sky. They lifted their dark hands over their upturned white eyes. Their mouths hung wide. In the hot noon for thousands of miles there were little towns where dark people stood with their shadows under them, looking up. |

Another hazard to travel in mountainous snowfields are the projections that are formed by snow blowing from the windward side of a ridge. The projections, or cornices, will not support your weight. You can usually spot them from the leeeward side, but from the windward you may see only a gently rounded snow covered ridge. Follow the ridge on the windward side well below the cornice line and no danger will come to you. |
