A TRIBUTE TO KATHERINE JACKSON Story and photos by OG Mac-Daddy
For decades the Jackson family has entertained the world. We grew up watching Michael, Janet, Jermaine and the rest. Yes, Joe and Kate Jackson must have had talent within their blood, for their children became the top performers of their time.
While Joe was the motivating force that drove the Jackson family to fame and fortune, Kate is the heart and soul of the family.
I first met Kate Jackson at a concert for her eldest daughter, Rebbie. The thing that impressed me most was her warmth and patience toward fans. She is always willing to pose for a photo or give a moment of her time.
Indeed, the public is quite infatuated with Katie. As Rebbie acknowledged her mother from the stage, the crowd politely stood and gave Kate an appreciative round of applause.
We were at a casino in Las Vegas. Rebbie lives in Vegas and often does shows that are free to the public. On this night, her brother Jermaine, who drove over from California to support her, joined her onstage. The crowd loved it!

Rebbie sang a montage of hits by The Jackson 5, Michael and Jermaine. At one point during the show I had the honor of dancing onstage with Rebbie (Actually she danced and I made her look good!)
A table was reserved for Kate and other family members. The audience spent as much time eyeing the elder Ms. Jackson as they did watching the stage show.
Kate has held the family together through trying times. Daughter LaToya’s controversial book about her family was such a time. Many family members made T.V. to explain that LaToya was probably under the bad influence of her ex-husband Jack Gordon. In 1997, LaToya divorced for physical abuse. She is now reconciled to her relatives and is back in the family.
When Michael lost his hair while filming a commercial, Kate was there to console her most famous son. As controversially surrounded husband Joe, she maintained her composure and dignity and was as steadfast as ever.
Actress Angela Basset portrayed her story on screen in the movie, The Jacksons-An American Dream, produced by Jermaine and longtime friend Shelly Berger.
The movie highlighted the many struggles Kate had to endure as Joseph led the family to stardom. Those early years were laced with sacrifice and reward.
Later, a tabloid revealed that Joseph sired a daughter with another woman. Joseph maintains a home in Las Vegas where the half sister of Michael resides.
Are the rumors true that producer OG Mac-Daddy is working to do an album on the "Other" Jackson? If so, his Talent Records might ask Michael or Jermaine to co-produce the album.

The family group was originally formed as a trio in Gary, Indiana, in 1963. The original members were the three eldest sons of the ex-guitarist for the Falcons, Joe Jackson: Jackie, Tito, and Jermaine. Known in the early days as Ripples and Waves Plus Michael and then the Jackson Brothers.
In 1968 the Jackson Five released Big Boy on a local label called Steeltown. Later that year, they signed a one-year contract with Motown. In 1969, Barry Gordy Jr. (Motown Records) bought the group out of their Steeltown contract and moved them out to Hollywood. Barry changed their name to Jackson 5.

Jermaine LaJuane was born on December 11, 1954 in Gary (Indiana), USA. Besides playing bass, he acted as vocal counterpoint to his younger brother Michael. He collaborated with Pia Zadora on the theme from the film Voyage Of The Rock Aliens, and with Whitney Houston on his 1986 project Precious Memories.
Rebbie (pronounced ree-bee) was born as Maureen Reilette Jackson. Rebbie made her professional debut at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas with The Jacksons. Michael penned and produced her very first hit Centipede.
Toriano Adaryll, also known as Tito, born October 15, 1953, is a man of many names and many talents. Today, he is better known as Poppa T. Tito is the father of such three talented sons, the group 3T.
LaToya, born May 29th, 1956. She appeared in Playboy magazine. She is also an author and speaker. Acted in The Jackson Variety show, Playboy Stars and LaToya’s Bedroom.
Jackie (Sigmund Esco Jackson), born May 14, 1951, was seen waving to the as he left the Marble Collegiate Church in New York City March 16, 2002 following the wedding of Liza Minnelli and David Gest . Jackie and his brothers Michael and Tito all attended the wedding. The entourage included Elizabeth Taylor, Diana Ross.
Marlon (Marlon David Jackson) was born March 12, 1957. Released album with Capitol/EMI Records Songs: Baby Tonight, Don't Go, Life, Lovely Eyes.
Randy (Stephen Randall Jackson). After working with the Jackson Five and assorted solo Jackson siblings, Randy went on to collaborate with music legends Kenny G and Divinyls.
Janet has replaced her brother Michael as the world’s highest paid singer. She signed with A&M Records and released her first album aged 16. Janet recently performed at TMF Awards in the Netherlands. She did her current single 'All For You'. Janet is currently in Europe doing some promo shows for her new single and album.
Michael (Michael Joseph Jackson), born August 29, 1958, the most famous and beloved Jackson is an inductee this year, along with Ashford and Simpson, into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
The grandchildren of Kate and Joseph are also entering show business.

The Jackson Family is indeed an American Dream. We have watched Michael evolve from a delightful little boy into a man that has become the world’s most successful entertainer. Janet charmed us with her first television appearance and continues to captivate us. LaToya taught us that the rich and famous face the same trials as everyone else. Tito shows that hard work pays off for everyone. Jermaine gave us that beautiful family story and allowed us to become a part of the Jacksons. Each one, in their own way has added more meaning and fun to our lives.
At the heart of the family is Katherine Jackson. She is a woman of strength, fortitude and devotion to her family. It is she who taught her children to respect every fan…to give something back to the community.
Through the good times and the hard times Kate has been there. And, she is an inspiration for all mothers who dream of their children becoming all that they can become.
