He was born Dec. 25, 1951. He was a 1970 graduate of E.C. Glass High School and a 1974 graduate of Lynchburg College. He also earned Master's degrees in both Education and Guidance Counseling. He was a career-educator having served the Lynchburg City School system with distinction for 27 years. Following graduation from college, Jimmie taught history at Sandusky Middle School, served as a guidance counselor at Heritage High School, and was then assigned as an assistant principal at E.C. Glass High School and later at Linkhorne Elementary School. He then began his career as a principal serving at Kizer and Dearington Elementary Schools. He was currently serving as the principal of Linkhorne Elementary School. Countless students, parents, and teachers will remember him as a concerned educator devoted to the best interests of his students. Jimmie was also a member of several professional education associations. He was a member of the Peakland United Methodist Church where he taught the Cokesbury Sunday school class. Jimmie was a songwriter and musician who took great pleasure in making music with his friends. "The following is an article from the "News and Advance". ..."On a much more somber note, I received a call the other day from a woman named Debbie Driskill. She wanted to talk about Jimmy Ping, the Linkhorne Elementary principal who died of cancer over the weekend at age 50. Specifically, she wanted to talk about what Ping did for her daughter Emily."When Emily was 9, she was diagnosed with leukemia," Driskill said, "and when she was undergoing chemo, she couldn't come to school. So Mr. Ping arranged for a trolley to come and pick her up for the picnic they had at the end of the year. On the back, it said, 'Emily's Big Day.' He also brought her gifts when she was sick. "And it wasn't just Emily. He was never too busy to stop and give a child a hug. He's someone all principals should imitate." I knew Jimmy Ping in a different way, as a songwriter and guitar player for the band "Justin Thyme." The group did its own material and had a unique sound built around lead singer Leighton Childress. Unfortunately, rock and roll bands composed of people over 30 have a hard time breaking into "the business," but I'd put some of Jimmy Ping's songs up against anybody's. One of them, based on the journal of a teenage suicide, is sweet and sad enough to make a rock cry. Incidentally, Emily Driskill is still with us, at age 14. What a pity that Jimmy Ping isn't".
