This is the first song to appear in the Divan of 14th century Persian Sufi poet Hafiz of Shiraz. Hafiz was Meher Baba's favorite poet. Baba often said to people, "If you want to be present, don't be absent!" which is a line from the closing couplet of this Ghazal. The lyrics to this song are a rough adaptation of the Wilberforce Clarke Translation of Hafiz. 'O Bartender' is the opening song on James R. Newell's upcoming CD 'The Songs of Hafiz,' to be released in Late February or early March 2001. |
