Brosky facts
Steve Brosky lives in Darktown, a somewhat remote one-street neighborhood just outside
Allentown, Pa. It's called Darktown because electricity didn't arrive until someone
ran a long extension cord out to a neighboring street that had power.
Or so the story goes.
For most people, Allentown's only pop music connection is its dubious
place of distinction in Billy Joel's Allentown, a song describing a decaying husk of
a town in post-industrial decline. For those who live here, though,
the only guy who can really write about this town is Steve Brosky, who at least takes care not
to include references to nonexistent coal mines when he pens his songs about local ennui.
At Allentown's height of popularity (the song, not the city), our mayor at the
time only half-jokingly asked Billy Joel for a cut of the royalties.
Steve, however, received no such request, but was instead given the key to the city
for his songs.
It's not that Steve's
songs are any more complimentary than Billy Joel's Allentown.
The difference in the mayor's reaction might have been caused by
the fact that Steve, if asked, simply wouldn't have had any royalities to share.
Maybe that's true, but I like to think that Steve got the key to the city because, as
one of us - Steve can say it.
We don't need to hear it from no New York songwriter!
