Nowadays, few bands even want to know any old school punk or 80's
metal, let alone be influenced by it. And that's a shame, as the Canadian band Phobia
clearly shows. Their music sounds like a mixture of not only old school punk and 80's
metal, but also streetcore and oi! And...it sounds great!
Even though their music might be heavily influenced by styles that have by now become 'old
school', it's definitely not outdated. I even dare to say that it's a lot more original
and progressive than most of the music influenced by more modern styles. The main reason
for this lies in the fact that their music consists of an unusual and daring mixture of
styles which might seem unlikely, but proves to provide a very consistent and
well-sounding whole.
The sound of Phobia is hard to describe. It features very raw vocals, combined with
guitars that seem to swing between metal and punk, an often dark bass and drums that sound
both rithmic and aggressive. The whole sounds like a more hardcore version of The Sex Pistols,
combined with a bit of The Exploited and Iron Maiden.
