Having never been able to capture my feelings for darling Kate in a song, I thought that we might at least share something special if we wrote one together. I suggested the idea and asked her to propose a topic. "Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches" was her response. So much for that activity. Until- in my car, once again- I started humming a little tune that would become the refrain for "Peanut Butter and Jelly Girl." By the time I returned to Chapel Hill, I had most of the song figured out. When I played the it for Kate, she liked the song well enough, I guess, but claimed that it "sounds like a kids' song" and that she "never really liked peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, actually." Look out, Barney. This one's for Kate, like it or not.(written in the fall of 1995) |
