The title "Scherzo" is simply Italian for "joke". Chopin's scherzi, however, are far from joky in character. They are more notable for their constant alternating between passionate intensity and gentle lyricism. The Scherzo No 1 in B minor was begun in 1831, when Chopin was 21 years old. The powerful and discordant opening at once establishes its turbulence and seriousness of purpose. The lyrical middle section is based on a Polish Christmas carol. |

One of Chopin's most beautiful and poetic Nocturnes, tinged with an under-lying melancholy. |
