EPISODES epochs of evolution Music is a language. Like all languages, it takes a while to become fluent and proficient in it. Many people speak English or French, but few communicate in Serbo-Croatian or in Swahili. If you have never heard Swahili or Serbo-Croatian , you may be shocked or amused by the sound upon first experiencing it. I compose modern music. Some people may call it contemporary classical art music, it's a language that not many people speak or are familiar with. However as little as a century ago, classical music was the pop music of today. Kurt Cobain was equivalent to Brahms. People understood the language. Somewhere and somehow in the time that followed, classical art music lost its audience. Its language became more foreign, its syntax convoluted. Today, this type of musical language may indeed invoke the same reaction as a person first hearing Swahili. |
