ARTIST: ELAN
SONG: TESTING THE WATERS
GENRE: ROCK / CLASSIC
SIMILAR: BOWIE-ISH/ZEPPLIN-ISH/FLOYD-ISH
I think the most impressive aspect of this tune is the fact that Elan is composed of three members. They track guitars, bass, vocals, keyboard and drums all themselves and do a fairly good job.
The drum beat is pretty steady the whole way through and they seem to have a fairly good grasp on fills. The rhythm guitars are solid and the lead has a certain "Stairway to Heaven"/Jimmy Page feel to it. The vocal work could be described as Bowie meets Lou Reed. Very well enunciated and with a light vibrato.
Lyrical content was also good in my opinion. Rich and full of metaphor (like any good song).
The production of the song has an obvious "home studio" sound but done very well. Levels are nice and everything is separated in the sonic spectrum so instruments are easily distinguishable.
Elan are very talented and have the capacity of making some good music.

This song reminded me of the band that sang that song in the '80's "Pretty In Pink". It had a nice b-movie vibe going on there. Relax, kick back, and listen to the sounds of...

I like the Psychadelic Furs, and this has that sort of groove to it - very strongly, actually. I like what you've done with the vocals - alternating pure with modified - or maybe it's two singers, but they're awfully close to be two different. Guitars are used sparingly but effectively.
