Out Now: I'm very happy to announce that "Vir Unis + Interstitial - Live at the Miramar" is now out and available direct from AtmoWorks. Digitally recorded live last year at the Miramar Theater in Milwaukee, WI during the Space For Music festival, this set features Vir Unis' synths, soundscapes, and fractal grooves melded with my bass, synth, and trumpet playing. I was honored to be able to play this set with John and to be a part of the festival which also featured Spacecraft, Giles Reaves, Ma Ja Le, and James Johnson.
Fall 2002: The SUB.TERRA Project on The Foundry. Press release: "The Foundry is pleased to announce the SUB.TERRA Project, a full length CD featuring remixes/recyclings of Interstitial's epic "sub.terra" piece. Contributors include vidnaObmana, Vir Unis, Saul Stokes, Michael Bentley (eM), and, of course, the inspirator Interstitial (John Koch-Northrup)."
Early 2003: Planned for early next year is my second full length solo album, "Kinetoscope", on Red Antenna.

From the AtmoWorks compilation "Portraits" which asked each artists to provide a self portrait in sound... Marco Polo combines a field recording of children playing the game Marco Polo in a pool, with faint industrial atmospheres, pulsing drones, and an improvised piano interlude. Memories of childhood in late summer and the many years since. |

Recorded in late 1989 this track is one of my earlier long form songs. I've cut it back from it's original 19 minutes to about 14. It has heavier driving drums underneath ambient-like synth pads and a repetitive, funky bass line. This piece shows where I was headed over 10 years ago. |

Recorded in 1989. This track starts extremely dark with variable speed and backwards/forwards tape manipulation. It rises out of this into a sampled drum groove with live (keyboard) drums played overtop. A deep bass line and flute comes in after a couple minutes. An ambient line recorded entirely backwards at double speed creates an atmosphere in the background. The song dissolves into a huge cacaphony of distorted noise and feedback with a fairly pretty string line. The opposition of noise and melody fits the song. Sort of an industrial ambient groove thing, maybe. |
