...But NOT at MP3.com!
After long and careful consideration, the members of Nero's Opening Act have finally decided that MP3.com sucks, so we're terminating our 'Platinum Artist' membership. Here are some of the reasons:
1) Crappy DAM CDs - If you've ever ordered a CD from MP3, you know why they call 'em DAM CDs. It's because the customer usually ends up saying, "DAM! I can't believe I paid my hard-earned money (plus S&H) for this crap!" The CDs themselves sound good, but let's face it, if you wanted CDs that sound good, you could download all the music you want for free from KazAa or WinMX.
People buy CDs for the packaging as much as for the music, and MP3.com's packaging simply doesn't cut it. Never in my wildest dreams would I have guessed that they made glossy toilet paper, yet that's what MP3 seems to be using for the CD inserts. To make matters worse, the inserts are cheaply printed and cut so off-center you'd think it was done by a demented 4-year-old.
We simply can't offer our fans this kind of crap for their money. Instead of calling them DAM CDs, they should call them S-HIT CDs.
2) MP3.com Uploader - I call this baby "Indy 500" -- Not because it's fast, but because it crashes a lot. Even when it doesn't crash, it often truncates files, so that after you've waited the required 4 hours and 47 minutes for MP3s staff to allegedly "verify" the file, you find that you have to do the whole thing over, because only the first 27 seconds of the file actually made it.
This program was obviously written by some retarded 13-year-old in a basement somewhere in Kentucky. No, wait -- that's not fair to retarded hillbilly teenagers -- if it'd been written by a retarded 13-year-old in Kentucky, it would actually work.
3) Pop-ups in the artist admin area - What kind of crap is this??? When I'm in the artist admin area, I'm conducting business; I don't have time to shop. Do you think the board of directors at MP3.com accept telemarketing calls in the middle of a board meeting? And to make matters even worse, if you close the pop-ups, you get booted out of the admin area, and have to log in all over again.
What boggles the mind is that somewhere, there's an advertiser who paid good money to be ignored by an MP3.com artist. Well, as of today, there's one less MP3.com Platinum Artist who's dumb enough to pay good money to be annoyed by that advertiser.
4) Nonexistent customer service - MP3.com charges its Platinum Artists as much as an ISP, yet offers them shoddiest customer service on the web. Try and find a link to the customer support area, I dare you. And should you actually discover their top-secret tech-support email address, be prepared to get a response that doesn't help at all, and rest assured that after that first response, they'll stop responding to your emails altogether.
5) It's only getting worse - Some months ago, MP3.com redesigned the entire website, promising Platinum Artists a whole host of improvements and new services. Those improvements have yet to materialize, and instead of increasing the value for the fee-paying Platinum Artists, MP3.com instead reduced the value to artists with free pages, with a whole host of new restrictions, such as limiting them to three songs on their artist page. The biggest change in the policy for Platinum Artists is that we no longer get paid "Payback For Playback".
(Darn, I'd come to depend on that 37 cents a month, too!)
