Welcome to the kOmpOsT MP3 homepage. What you'll find here are ROUGH home recordings, DEMOS, with lots of fidelity issues. Please don't let that stop you from checking out the SONGS, which are always melodic and weird. Thanks for listening!
WEEKLY MESSAGE 11/24/03: Man, what a weekend. I am DEAD right now, having had about 6 hours of sleep over this entire past weekend; was it worth it? You decide. First of all, Friday found Nipper and I at a great party hosted by our good friend Sabrina -- we had a great time and partied until the wee hours of the morning, hanging out with all kinds of cool people. I had a sobering discussion with Dionysus Records founder Lee Joseph about the "indie state of the industry"; man, things are rough out there for indie labels these past few years. Anyway, the party was a lot of fun -- thank you, Sabrina! Saturday night we went to see the always-interesting Todd Rundgren; although Nipper was disappointed because he played a lot of covers -- and pretty much played the same originals that he's been playing live for years -- we had a nice time anyway and really enjoyed the show. Todd was in great voice, perhaps slightly tipsy, and his playing was pretty spot-on -- a rarity, or so I've heard. This was a general admission show, and we scored a sweet spot -- center stage, about twenty feet back, with perfect sight and sound-lines. All in all a nice evening. On Sunday, sans Nipper, me and my ex- Receiver buddy Ken West spent the day in lovely Whittier working the Neal Morse extravaganza. Wow, what a great day, and a great show. Neal and his all-star band put on an emotion-drenched performance spanning three hours, leaving the sold-out audience drained -- and screaming for more. It was really cool getting to meet Neal (what a nice, grounded guy), and I also met and chatted with Neal's awesome bandmate (and amazing solo artist in his own right) Rick Altizer; great guys, both, and both incredible musicians. In fact, the entire band were absolutely superb, top notch in every way. A few times there were five-part vocal harmonies happening that sounded like a choir from heaven -- incredible. The staff -- under the steady guidance of Wayne Perez (aka DJ Gruno) and Papa Jim -- all pulled together and helped the slightly over-sold show come off without a hitch. I must say that for me, personally, the highlight of the day was when I got to play Mike Portnoy's drums during soundcheck; here's a picture of the basic set-up he used. Of course, I wanted to hit every damned cymbal and drum in the kit, and I started playing some slightly crazy stuff until sound engineer Rich Mouser told me to reign it in. Dang! Anyway, being a good boy, I started playing a simple 4/4 beat along with Neal's bassist (his first name is Randy and damned if I can't remember (or find) his last name -- help me!) when Portnoy -- in all his bearded glory -- comes out and stands right in front of the kit, checking me out, bobbing his head. The fact that he didn't throw my sorry ass off the kit means a lot to me!!! Anyway, it was an incredible day, an incredible show, lots of friendships were established, and I even managed to hand out a few of my own demos (gee, are you surprised?). Many thanks to everyone involved. Anything after last weekend feels kind of like a let-down, but Nipper and I are looking forward to spending Thanksgiving in Las Vegas with my parents. With this being a holiday week, I doubt I'll get any recording done. However, last week I finalized a demo of a Burt Bacharach-ish song called "Mourning Dove", and it turned out pretty cool -- I think it might make a cool Tribeca song. Speaking of Tribeca, Dave English is supposed to be back in town this week after doing some recording in Oklahoma with Matt Gaskins; I'm not sure if we'll squeeze in a rehearsal this week or not. And that, my friends, is all for now. Here's wishing all of you a great Thanksgiving weekend -- be safe and have fun. Until next week, remember: architecture is frozen music, so build yourself a craftsman bungalow in Pasadena today. xoxox kErrY xoxox
